Origin
A project based on faith
The origin of Valdelosfrailes as a winery goes back to the winemaking tradition of Carlos Moro’s family, whose ancestors cultivated vineyards, had wineries and made wine in the areas of Cubillas de Santa Marta and Valoria la Buena.
In 1997, a winery owner and winegrower, who had already founded Bodega Matarromera in the DO Ribera del Duero, decided to bet on the vineyards in that area and build the winery where he would produce magnificent red wines. In 1999, he expanded this project by undertaking an ambitious investment plan including the winery in the Cigales DO. He called the winery Valdelosfrailes (‘valley of the friars’) to commemorate the origin of the wine in the region, which dates back to the 12th century and to the Cistercian friars of the Monastery of Santa María de Palazuelos, and started to produce elegant, fruity, well-balanced and mineral wines.
Then begins a revolution in the production of red wines from that area, and the production of new red wines for laying down. Today, this winery continues to produce quality wines with refined elaboration and limited production.
